DECKING – A Wizard Answer

Contact Us

Decking is constructed by fixing a series of boards to supporting joists that are, themselves, supported over, or directly onto, the ground underneath.

Your design must maximise air-flow through and around the construction to ensure good ventilation.

The boards must be made for the purpose and be of preservative treated timber (as must all of the support structure) and be of at least 28mm thick.

There are thinner, and cheaper boards available but it is false economy to use them. Unless you put the carrying joists closer together you will have bounce in your decking that the thicker boards do not have.

Choice of Decking Boards

Decking built out over sloping ground. Note the lovely silvery colour if no stain or colouring is used.

When choosing your decking boards don’t be mislead by the terms "hardwood" and "softwood". Both offer a high level of durability so your choice should be based on:

  • How you want it to look
  • How much you want to spend
  • Which is the easiest material to work with

We would recommend that for the self-builder softwood boards are used on account of their user friendliness and price.

Softwood boards are generally available in two grades:

  • Southern Yellow Pine - premium quality, typically with little or no knots
  • Scandinavian Pine - a more price conscious option

Check that your timber has been pressure treated to the industry recognised environmental standards. This makes it highly durable and wear resistant for up to 30 years.

Planning Permission

As a general rule decks are treated the same as paved patios and do not require planning approval unless they are above 3m from ground level. If you are in doubt check with your local authority.
