Here the project was to turn quite a large plot into a classic English garden. Nothing in the existing garden was worth keeping and there was a distinct rise to the South West corner.

The clients requests were for a natural pond, new and larger patio, classic planting and garden features – without going over the top.

The new patio, lawn and pond were created at the lower level. Steps with a small rockery to the left and planting to the right lead to a shingled upper area planted with alpines and with a sundial as a central feature.

A lavender and rose walk leads back to the lower area.

Constructing Sleeper Steps

Sleepers are generally available but there are also new sleepers stocked by some merchants and wood yards. These are made from treated soft wood but although not having the character of the real thing are very good.
