All plants require soil that has been well prepared by cultivation and the inclusion of a good soil improver such as:
- Manure
- Mushroom compost
- Well rotted garden compost
- Phlagm peat
- Proprietary compost
If your bed is prepared correctly:
- The life of your planting scheme will be lengthened.
- Maintenance is made easier.
- Plants will be healthier and look and flower better.

Time and a little money spent initially will reap big dividends later.

Shrubs and plants with woody growth need at least 300mm of well dug soil to accommodate the initial container shaped root structure.
They also need a further 300mm depth of forked over soil for the free root growth that is necessary for quick establishment and rapid growth.
A good planting compost is required and it should be made slightly moist. It you use the compost we supply, which has long life fertiliser added, you will not need to add anything else. If using plain peat you must add some bone meal or slow release fertiliser for the plants first season.
Before planting the plants should be well watered. Place the one you are dealing with in a bucket of water while you are preparing the hole, wait for the air bubbles to have stopped coming out, then plant up.
