Water Feature

We deal here with a feature that has running water but no ‘open water’ as such.

A good water feature should not only be good looking but designed for the least maintenance problems – and this generally means keeping algae growth to a minimum.

In order to keep your water as algae free as possible you need as large a reservoir as is practical. Algae can only grow when the water is in direct sunlight. The bigger the reservoir the less likelyhood there will be of algae growth.

For example a small reservoir of, say, 250 x 300 x 300mm will offer its water to sunlight 14 times more often than the following example which has a reservoir of 950 x 350mm. The smaller reservoir is therefore providing an environment 14 times more condusive to algae growth.

The many small water features and water features kits on the market tend to have one big problem. They all have small reservoirs.

Our example consists of:

  • Brick walls topped with coping stones (slabs)
  • Waterproof liner
  • Wood platform to take the stones, pots etc and a fountain or ornament – water from the fountain drains through holes in the platform back into the reservoir
  • A pump and electrics

A basic design for a raised water feature.
