We give you two levels of pruning procedure to suite your aspirations and gardening time available.

  • Basic Pruning - for gardeners in a hurry.
  • The Wizard Pruning Procedure - to get the absolute best from your shrubs. For gardeners with a little more time and probably a more established garden.

Use these instructions in conjunction with our on-line Plant Profiler. The Profiler gives prunning codes for every shrub in your planting plan. These codes refer to the different groups shrubs are put in for pruning purposes.

Always use a good quality pair of sharp secateurs to make clean and healthy cuts.

Basic Pruning

Most shrubs need very little pruning. Taken at its simplest pruning requires you to:

  • Retain a shrub's shape and proportion.
  • Take out any diseased or dead wood and remove any weak growth. i.e. keeping the plant healthy and vigorous.

Basic simple pruning is best done for the different groupings of shrubs at different times of the year. These groups, their codes and what to do are as follows:

So, for this simplest pruning regime, you will need just two visits to your garden.

  • In the Spring - for Winter flowering and the later flowering shrubs.
  • In the Summer for early flowering shrubs.

If you miss one of these pruning opportunities or you are unable to do it at the right time, no harm will be done done.
But for their long term health and vitality you must try to stick to the regime.
