If your area is turfed, strip off the turf first, then lay a permeable membrane (plantex) over the whole area. Otherwise just lay the membrane onto prepared soil – having got rid of any weeds or other vegetation first.
Then spread your stone evenly over the whole area to a depth of about 1˝" and mix in any other sized stone.
Cover the whole area with your main order of stone. Place pieces of larger sized stone around and ‘rattle’ them with a rake so that the edges of the pile mix in with smaller stone.
How to calculate the weight of gravel / shingle / ornamental stone to be delivered.

Then divide cubic yard by 2 and multiply by 3 to give tons.
Example Calculation:

Plot your area as per the diagram and measure the average length and width.
Do a rough calculation to check that the red areas roughly equate to the brown areas.

If you are ordering from our supplier make sure you are ordering a full ton to get the best value from the carriage charge i.e. make sure your chosen area equates with the area a 1 ton lot will cover.
