Planting Up

First arrange your plants, then:

  • Sweep aside sufficient stone for your proposed planting hole.
  • Cut a cross in the membrane and fold the corners under.
  • Dig your hole, putting the earth into a bucket.
  • Put in some planting compost and plant up – heeling in well.
  • Unfold the membrane so that it covers the hole up to the plant stem and spread the stone back over it.
  • Water well.
Diagram 1   You may have one or more sides of your shingle garden that butts up to soft landscaping i.e. a lawn or plant bed. You will need to put a divider between the shingle area and the grass or planting bed otherwise the one will invade the other.
This diagram shows:
 a. An edge of rustic poles, which can be layed in a curve using the natural bends in them and cutting the ends to fit.
 b. Gravel boards fixed to wooden pegs, every 4’. You can join two boards end to end using 2’ of the same board and securing it firmly to make a joint. Keep it 1” down from the top edge so that earth or turf will cover it. They can be laid a slight curve by just bending them. Tighter curves can be obtained by putting saw cuts in the back of the board – every 1” and half-way through the board. The wood is then bent with the cuts on the inside of the curve. Alternatively, especially if the edge has an irregular shape, plastic lawn edging can be used or you may have some other suitable material.
 c. Tighter curves can be obtained by putting saw cuts in the back of the board – every 1” and half-way through the board. The wood is then bent with the cuts on the inside of the curve.
 d. Or you can use brick edging.

Alternatively, especially if the edge has an irregular shape, plastic lawn edging can be used or you may have some other suitable material.

Wizard Tip

N.B. Shingle laid straight onto membrane is only OK for occasional walking on. Stone slides about on the ultra smooth membrane making walking awkward. If part of your shingle garden is used as a path you must have a proper foundation which is 2”- 4” of rubble or crushed aggregate then 2” of well consolidated hoggin. Then spread your stone over the top to blend in with that on the membrane.
