Rockeries are associated with alpine plants and should be constructed so that not only is the rock shown to best advantage but also that the alpines thrive. Other plants and conifers can be used as well, particularly as a backdrop to the general structure and if evergreen to give extra winter interest.
Rockeries can be any size varying from small arrangements set in formal surroundings to large features taking up quite a proportion of your garden. They should face South or East.
They are best sited in an open position with plenty of light and away from any trees, particularly decidious trees. Alpines do not like drafts so keep away from windy spots or screen well, either with something structural or an evergreen planting.
