With these you just mark out the area to be used plus a little bit over all round then prepare the area as described on the previous page.
Rockeries on an artificial mound
This is done to give the rockery height. Obviously you have to get material from somewhere. The options are:
i) You have existing soil to get ride of, perhaps from a pond you have dug or better still you have building rubble. If the soil to be used is of suitable quiality and free draining then you just construct the mound as per the instructions as explained previously but without the layer of brick or stone. If the soil is not free draining the you must have the extra drainage layer.
ii) If you have no soil to create the mound then you have to get it from either some other part of the garden or buy it in. If buying in, use rubble or reject stone, or the cheapest free draining material you can find. It will be much more suitable than soil and probably cheaper.

Rockery designed to produce its own soil for a mound on which to sit the rocks.
Here Volume A has been dug out and placed into a mound at B. If your soil is not free draining dig a sump in A to take run off from heavy rain.
Alternatively construct a small pond instead of a sump, which when flooded by run off would look quite natural until the water had subsided. The likelyhood of plant damage would be small. Soil produced from the pond would be put on mound at B.
A further idea would be to have the pond fed by a stream falling down the rockery (see our 'One Hit' option on ponds and water features for construction details). This of course would be fantastic.
