Setting Your Standing Stone

Contact Us

Standing stones need firmly and safely fixing at the base. In order not to ‘bury’ too much of your standing stone set it on a bed of weak concrete.

Standing Stone Diagram

Dig out a hole about 9” (22cm) deep and a little wider than the shape of the base of the stone. Fill with a dryish mix of 6 parts ballast or sharp sand and 1 part cement. Then ‘walk’ the stone onto the concrete and wiggle it firmly into place. Check from all angles that it is upright.

Now knap the mortar 1/2” (1.2cm) or so up the sides of the stone and leave well alone for a couple of days to let the concrete harden off. The smaller, flatter stones can be laid without a concrete base.

An alternative to setting the stone on shingle or decorative stone is to set them amongst ground hugging plants or even grass. But there is no doubt that unless your stones are pretty huge they look at their best set on shingle or stone.

Here a large standing stone has been set in an area of mixed sized stone with plenty of planting.

The stone has been drilled so that water can flow from the top and circulate via a tank/reservoir at the foot of the stone. Our supplier can arrange for this drilling.
